"Prima Civitas" may be translated in Latin as either "First City" or "First State." Embracing both meanings, the Prima Civitas initiative seeks to help the greater Mid-Michigan region in order to make Michigan the most innovative state in the nation.

To enhance Mid–Michigan, Prima Civitas emphasizes sustainable entrepreneurship, job growth, wealth creation, higher quality of life, equitable educational opportunities and a strong community identity, commitment, and momentum.
